  1. Gather Equipment: As with any matcha preparation, you’ll need a few essential utensils: a tea bowl (chawan), a bamboo whisk (chasen), a bamboo scoop (chashaku), and a fine mesh sieve (furui).
  2. Sift Matcha Powder: Use the bamboo scoop to measure about 1 to 2 teaspoons of matcha powder into the tea bowl. Sift the matcha powder through the fine mesh sieve directly into the bowl to ensure a smooth and lump-free consistency.
  3. Add Hot Water: Heat water to just below boiling (around 175°F to 180°F or 80°C to 85°C). Pour a small amount of hot water (about 2 ounces or 60 milliliters) into the tea bowl over the matcha powder.
  4. Whisking: Hold the tea bowl firmly with one hand and use the other hand to whisk the matcha and water mixture vigorously in a zigzag motion using the bamboo whisk. Whisk until the matcha is fully dissolved and a layer of froth forms on the surface.
  5. Adjust Consistency: After whisking, assess the consistency of the matcha. Usucha should have a light and frothy texture, similar to the foam on a latte. If the matcha is too thick, you can add a small amount of hot water and whisk again until you achieve the desired consistency.
  6. Serve: Once the matcha is well-mixed and frothy, admire the vibrant green color and aroma, then serve the Usucha by presenting the bowl with both hands, offering it with gratitude and respect.
